Can I register my child if no one in the family is French-speaking?

Yes. First and foremost, the Lycée is a bilingual school, and all teachers and staff are fluent in at least English and French. A significant percentage of the students registered at the Lycée come from Anglophone families who are seeking to weave a multicultural multilingual perspective into their children's education.

How can we help when no one at home speaks French?

First, there will be no homework before Grade 1. The main objective of homework is to teach our students to be responsible and to organize their time. All homework assignments involve work completed in class, yet if the child experiences difficulty, the parent will encourage the child to explain this to the teacher the following day. Above all, it is the parent's role to provide an atmosphere conducive to home study. It is the supportive attitude of the parents, which ensures the success of the student, as well as the participation of the whole family in activities that reflect the French culture.

Does the Lycée offer an out of school care program?

The Before and after school Child Care Program is available from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Study Hall is available after school for students from Grade 1 onwards, and offers students an opportunity to do their homework under supervision by our teachers.

Does the school provide lunches?

All children bring their own lunch. In the Maternelle, a teacher or an assistant supervises the lunch. Manners and etiquette are addressed. From Grade 1 onwards, the children eat in the lunchroom. Again the mealtime is supervised by assistants and by teachers. Mealtime is followed by a recess.

Do the children go outside?

Yes. The Maternelle students have their own playground and go outside in the morning, after lunch and in the afternoon, unless it is very cold outside. There are usually four adults supervising the Maternelle students.
The students from Grade One onward also go outside to their own playground three times a day, unless it is too cold, in which case activities are organized in the gymnasium. Teachers also supervise the children during recess.

Do the teachers speak English to the children?

The teachers will speak English if the student is having difficulty understanding or expressing him or herself. In the Maternelle, the amount of English spoken generally decreases as the school year progresses. Typically there is very little English spoken in the classroom after December.

What kind of French will the children learn?

The accent and expressions reflect the standard French language from France.

What if my child is not yet fully potty trained?

A
We require that all students enrolled in the maternelle program (3, 4 and 5 years old) be fully potty trained by the time their program begins. The school is not equipped to change or clean students that are not able to go to the toilet themselves.

Does the Lycée have a dress code for maternelle students?

Plain navy pants, shorts, skort, tunic
Plain white, red or navy top
Navy socks or tights
Fridays are casual dress day for all of Maternelle.
